    Which near-field monitor?

My old monitor boxes (M-Audio Studiophile DX4) are pretty outdated and don't fulfill my needs anymore - it's time for a change!
So I've been searching the internet up and down, but the trouble is, that most of the people, that publish their opinion about speakers, are more interested in "hip-hop" than in orchestral music. So I was wondering if we would prefer the same type of monitor-box.

I read and heard a lot of good things about the Yamaha HS-80m... maybe anybody here is using them and can tell me about his experiences? Or do you have any other idea or suggestion?

I think €500 is the maximum amount I can spend on it at the moment.

Oh, by the way: I'm using an iMac 27 (i7, 8GB RAM), Logic 9 and a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP as audio-interface.

I really appreciate any kind of advice or comment.

    Thanx in advance,

    Matthias

    BlueSky MediaDesk or ProDesk.

I´m mixing a huge band & orchestra live DVD in a studio with Genelec main monitors and Dynaudio/Yamaha nearfields and took my 5.1 MediaDesk system with me, and to be honest this small system is almost as powerful and accurate as the big boys.

So you think the Yamaha HS-80m is (as a "big boy") definitely worth a try?

    I think you're missing Dietz's point Matthias...

Do I? Hmmm... I thought he wanted to tell me, that a big and expensive speaker system isn't always necessary, and that even small (= cheaper) speakers can do the job. That's where I would see my Yamaha speakers. Did I get him wrong?

Well admittedly I could be taking Dietz too literally but he recommended Blue Sky. You then said "ah so these Yamaha's are good?". I don't think it necessarily follows that all smaller monitors are as good as Blue Sky's in Dietz's opinion. That's the way I read it anyway...

    Ahh, now I understand!

Somehow i overlooked the first line "BlueSky MediaDesk or ProDesk"... so I misunderstood the rest of his post.

Okay, guess w solved it! Anyway, thank you for pointing to "Blu Sky's"... never heard before of this brand, but meanwhile I read some articles about them... this really sounds interesting!

They're probably a bit outside your price range, but I got a pair of Adam-A7's and I'm loving them.  I think they have some cheaper models as well although I haven't tried them out.

Yes, they are about €400 each... that's a little bit too much for me at the moment.
